What is the Internet?
The Internet is a global network of independently operated networks that provide a variety of information and communication facilities. These networks facilitate end to end connectivity and the ability to share information. Information is facts provided or learned about something or someone. Because anyone can post information on the Internet than not all information is fact, but opinion. It is important to discern the difference.
The Internet opened up the world to us. There we can see the lives of people we have never met, see places we may never travel to, and be exposed to ideas that we would have otherwise never heard of. It’s the invention of the age. An invention that has exposed us to the entire world with a mere click of the mouse.
The Internet is amazing. Our lives are better for the opportunity that it provides. The Internet has the power to place a scary world in our view. A world that we cannot control. A world that can be terrifying and beautiful all at once. Depending on how we use it we can construct a new world around us. We can judge our relationships by our social media accounts, the lives of others from a distance, and base our understanding of life on what goes viral. If its viral it’s important and becomes a part of our real world.
I check my feed. She is upset, he is made, he is traveling, I am not sure why she posted that, are they getting divorced, why did she share that post, I didn’t know they could afford a vacation, why are they moving, why doesn’t she like my posts, why does she post about food all the time, why does she only post pictures of herself, did you see that post about his affair, they got a new car and I don’t think his wife even works, oh did you see that post of a bible verse. That’s nice.
Real life waits me for after that. My mind is full of political drama, talks of war, pictures of disaster, suffering and massacre. My mind is busy with the information I picked up from social media. I turn to what is really happening at home and that sends me into a tail spin. This bill, that bill, this notification, the reality of our careers, health problems, cleaning, responsibility, dinner, mess, laundry, mess, work tomorrow, more mess.
I slip into bed and hope that it will all just go away somehow and I will get a good night’s sleep. How could I possibly think I will settle my mind long enough to rest. The minute my eyes open up I check my phone. Uh oh. Notifications. I better see what is going on. Things don’t look good and I haven’t even made it to the kitchen yet. My heart begins to race. Got to feed the cat, the dog, what do I need to do today? Kids are awake, husband, and somehow we grab a Pop Tart and make it to school and work. Thing’s just don’t look good. The Internet told me.
Check out this video on YouTube (just a few minutes):
The information in the Bible is eternal, God breathed and Holy Spirit inspired. God is still active in our lives and still working for our good. He is somehow still very aware of what is going on today and what will go on in the future. There is almost an utter hopelessness that can set in if we believe that viral news posts dictate our future. What hope is there for life? There is utter hope if we let Scripture into our heart and mind and let it saturate our being. There is utter hope in God. There aren’t always a lot of clear answers, but there is hope!
Job 42:2 “I know you can do all things”
Job 9:4 “He is wise in heart and mighty in strength”
Job 12:13 “With God are wisdom and might; He has counsel and understanding”
Hebrews 4:16 “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need”
He is the one. He is wise, mighty, can do all things, and is where we receive mercy and grace. It is the I Am!
Information Doesn’t Please
One of the most frustrating things about information is that it does not satisfy. It always leave us wanting more. If we are fueled and filled by information we need to be constantly filled with it to receive any type of satisfaction. I haven’t been on Facebook for a couple hours. I better check to see what is going on. It’s a desire for information. A desire to know because if I know than I am safe. Everything is okay.
God’s Word isn’t information. It’s life to the soul. It’s guidance for the weary, rest for the tired, and a balm to the hurting. God Word fills us and satisfies our desire to know. Ultimately it’s about Who you know not what you know. It’s about knowing Him and when we get our information about life from Him we will find satisfaction, peace and rest in life.

I struggle with trusting God and make many excuses for why I don’t spend time with Him and as a result I feel empty and have lost peace. What about you?
