She says to keep going. It will get better.
She tells me not to give up. Read my Bible. I will find strength.
I listen to a sermon. The pastor talks about how some great men of God persevered.
Someone tells me to rise above my problems. Just keep moving on. Have fun anyway.
I am told to ignore it, forget it, and just live my life!
All that helps, for a moment. Those words of encouragement don’t last. In a matter of minutes, or hours I am back to facing my struggle. and it starts to get the best of me. It hasn’t gone away, and now that I am alone, I feel like giving up.
What do they know? They haven’t been through this. Their life is great. What good is their empty words? I was alone, I am alone, and I will be alone in this trial. Why do I even talk to people. Keep going? No, how about I quit?
But, God has something to say.
What if God expects us to keep going? Does that change things?
If God expects me to act in a certain way then perhaps I should think differently about how I am reacting to a trial.
So what does God say?
“I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.” Jeremiah 32:40
When we accept Jesus Christ as our savior we enter into an eternal covenant with God. On the day of our salvation we begin a journey of change and growth. We learn to fear God. God saved us, and God keeps us. Since we are kept by God, we must keep going. It’s a part of our relationship with Him.
“My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by[a] the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. ” John 17:15-23
Jesus prayed that we would persevere. He didn’t pray that we would be taken out of the world of suffering, but that we would persevere through it. He was concerned that we would be protected from evil, and set apart by His Word. He prayed we would keep going. Before we were even born.
” Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” Hebrews 7:25
Jesus always intercedes for us. Always. Can we keep going on ? Yes. Should we? Yes
When life gets tough I need something besides nice words to get me through. I need to know that God is keeping me, interceding for me, and expects me to run my race.
When we can’t see an inch in front of us, we know God can.
When it looks like he won’t come back home, we know God is interceding.
When it seems like our heart can’t break anymore, we know that God will keep us through the heart ache.
We take life moment by moment. We take a step, and then another. We cry and hurt along the way, but we don’t stop. Our Lord is walking right alongside of us. He leads the way. He our motivation to endure and persevere.
For God’s Glory,
